WHEN WILL PENNY MARATHON SYDNEY TAKE PLACE?
On Sunday, 2 October 2022.
As some of you know, we had to postpone the original date of Sunday, 10 July, due to the extreme weather in Sydney. It was on that date that people around the world participated in the 11 th Penny Marathon.
WHERE DOES THE ROUTE BEGIN AND END IN SYDNEY?
The Penny Marathon in Sydney is 22 kilometres (half-marathon). The event takes place in Brighton Le Sands.
It starts at Lance Studdert Reserve in Kyeemagh and ends at Brighton Le Sands, near Bay Street, along the pier. Streets will not be shut down (it’s one fully pathed route; no cross-streets!). We’ll be sharing the bike/running path with others on that day.
Take a look at the map.
Watch this video.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
It doesn’t. It’s free. We also provide water and sports drink but recommend you bring any gels that work for you.
HOW FAST DO YOU NEED TO RUN OR CYCLE?
This is a symbolic (rather than competitive) run. What does this mean? We run and cycle, in the main, in unison. The runners will aim to keep a pace of 9-10 kilometres an hour. The cyclists are there to provide support to the runners; for example, give water, clear the path ahead or motivate them.
HOW DO I DONATE OR SET UP A FUNDRAISING PAGE?
It’s very easy and takes a few minutes. Follow the instructions here. At 2021, the Penny Marathon had provided over $122,611 to more than 164 animal rescue groups and individual rescuers in six countries.
I AM A CYCLIST. DO I NEED TO CYCLE THE WHOLE 22 KILOMETRES?
If you’re a cyclist, it is a very easy 22 kilometres. So, yes. You will cycle at the pace of the runners (who will run as a unit, ideally) and provide water, gels and motivation!
I AM A RUNNER. DO I NEED TO RUN THE WHOLE 22 KILOMETRES?
No! It’s a matter of joining in at a distance that suits you.

HOW DO PEOPLE DONATE?
The Penny Marathon is a registered Australian charity with deductible gift recipient status. That means all donations are tax deductible. At 2021, we had provided over $122,611 to more than 164 animal rescue groups and individual rescuers in six countries.
Each year, we set up a fundraising page through the My Cause portal. Here’s the 2022 portal. You’ll notice that participants have already started to set up pages to be sponsored by friends and family. You can do the same.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE PENNY MARATHON?
Easily, through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Tik Tok. There are several videos on YouTube that can give you an idea of what to expect.
